The Waterway Gateway to a Harbor Island’s Local Charm:
Cijin Ferry Station’s “Big Harbor Shop” Opens for a Limited Time

A Modern Change of the Sandbar’s Ferry
The Cijin Ferry Station’s modern transformation from a transit hub to a cultural window has been realized through the Gushan-Cijin Ferry Business Local Revitalization Project. Building on the Simple-Basic Design team’s philosophy and experience with old house renewal, we recognized the ferry station’s potential as a cultural vessel beyond its practical function.
The project began by renovating the existing first-floor office space and the second waiting room. Simple-Basic Design handled the initial interior design, and Siao Ben Aiyu later assisted with business recruitment. This successfully brought together the first group of local revitalization partners, who are collectively infusing this seaport gateway with visitor traffic and a cultural arts atmosphere, paving the way for a sustainable transformation. This collaborative spirit is now carried forward by X-Basic Planning, which invited The Big Harbor Shop, a brand deeply rooted in Cijin, to establish a presence. They are transforming local culture into curated products, food, drinks, and cultural experiences, all presented to visitors at the The Big Harbor Shop.
The core operation of The Big Harbor Shop is to harness the regenerative energy of the Cijin Technicians’ Quarters, a social innovation hub. It provides a sales and exhibition platform for the dedicated artisans and studios there, creating an ideal “front shop, back factory” model. Through deepening local connections, the ferry station is no longer just a corridor that travelers hurriedly pass through, but has become a cultural stronghold where one can read local creations and where memories can dock.

A Local Gift from the Harbor Isle
The Big Harbor Shop offers exclusive local products, harbor-isle-inspired food and beverages, and travel information services. It also hosts occasional workshops and presents the harbor isle’s culture through a micro-exhibition concept centered on three main themes: “Big Harbor Selects”, “Island Cuisine”, and “Ship Flag Research”.
Big Harbor Selects | Collecting the Warmth of Harbor
Featuring carefully selected creations from Cijin artisans, the store transforms harbor imagery into tangible items. Local artist Chen Nien Kang Market captures the daily scenery of the harbor isle on postcards and stickers. The San Jin Wu team uses traditional hand-printing techniques to apply the Abundant Catch totem, a symbol of a bountiful harvest, onto tote bags, turning a harborside blessing into a personal accessory.
Creativity inspired by everyday life is also showcased here. For instance, the ZhiZhiren Textile Studio draws inspiration from fishermen’s tools to create delicate fishing net bags and small fish-shaped pouches. The Old Objects Clinic & Chat Room repurposes old window frames, sanding them down into rustic card holders, creatively breathing new life into old wood. Inside the store, you’ll find hanging ornaments by Morris, crafted from local Cijin seeds, and beeswax wood polish from a collaboration between Cijin Bee Chaser and Shih-Di Design. There are also meticulously curated artisan DIY kits and Harborside Ripple love-themed lucky bags from Shih Hsuan Made.

Island Cuisine | Savoring the Local Flavors of Cijin
The Big Harbor Shop introduces seasonal drinks and specialty snacks, transforming the local Cijin character into sweet, refreshing flavors and savory aromas. Every name on the menu holds a deep memory of the harbor: Prosperity Pop (a pineapple sparkling drink) plays on the Taiwanese words for “pineapple” (wanglai, sounding like “prosperity arrives”) and “fully loaded” (manzai), offering a refreshing blessing for the community. Safe Journey Tea, brewed with local tea leaves and pineapple honey, is a wish for smooth sailing. Sea Salt Tea represents the beginning and end of every islander’s journey, while Big Harbor CC Special Blend Coffee evokes the sensation of the sea breeze with its distinct roasted aroma.
For a savory snack, Cijin Popped Shrimp Crackers are a must-try. Made with local acetes shrimp, these crackers deliver an authentic taste of the region in every bite. This delicious and convenient snack has become the store’s most popular souvenir.

Ship Flag Research | Uncovering the Cultural Codes of the Sea
In Cijin’s culture, the “abundant catch” flag is a modern ceremony for returning ships. Flags of various colors on the bow signify blessings for the community and also announce the type of fish caught as the vessel enters the harbor.
Over time, this complex and solemn craft has evolved into a more simplified practice. To preserve this tradition, the Chung Yuan Christian University USR project connected with San Jin Wu, a team dedicated to collecting, restoring, and using local materials. Having mastered the craft and its suitable raw materials, they are now continuing the art of ship flag making.
Today, the San Jin Wu team’s research and interpretation of ship flag culture have found an accessible outlet at The Big Harbor Shop. This tradition is now showcased not only through a line of related products but also as an immersive cultural experience for visitors. The store periodically hosts workshops and guided tours by reservation, inviting visitors to follow in the artisans’ footsteps and discover the stories behind their crafts.
From souvenirs and refreshments to immersive activities, The Big Harbor Shop has concentrated Cijin’s cultural heritage into this seaside pavilion. We invite travelers to step off the ferry, feel the warmth of local craftsmanship, taste the sea breeze, and embrace the harbor town’s atmosphere – turning every visit into a rich cultural journey.
