Preserving and Creating: A Tribute to History and Place

After a year of dedicated evaluation and maintenance of cultural heritage, X-Basic Planning will showcase the results in an exhibition launching in early 2024. 'Preserving and Creating' encapsulates what we have learned: the purpose of historic site preservation is not to mute the past, but to let its deep cultural layers generate unique new value when people breathe life back into these spaces.

We thank the Bureau of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, for the opportunity to visit remarkable architectural sites across the island. The four-week exhibition, ‘Preserving and Creating,’ is the X-Basic team’s effort to give concrete form to what we have witnessed. Through artifacts, illustrations, and interviews, we translate the value of historic site preservation into an accessible experience, dedicated to history, the land, and every visitor.

In this exhibition, the X-Basic team not only highlights this year’s award-winning projects but also contextualizes them within a ten-year review of Taiwan’s cultural heritage preservation journey, revealing the evolution of its core concepts. The public can now view award-winning case stories, publications, and related artifacts at Hengtao Hall in the Cultural Heritage Park of the Ministry of Culture. Game cards are available at the entrance! Find the answers to its cultural heritage questions as you explore, and learn more about how we manage and preserve historic sites.

The main visual design is composed of deconstructed architectural structures and patterns from the award-winning cases, reconfigured by the X-Basic team. Staff prepare the ‘Preserving and Creating’ exhibition entrance prior to the opening, carefully realizing its conceptual vision.

The exhibition showcases this year’s award-winning cases not only through text, images, and interviews but also via artifacts, models, and creative products, thereby outlining each project’s historical context and modern identity.

Silent witnesses to a bustling past, the ‘Yung Kuang Tea Company’ sign and tea canisters from the Chiang A-hsin Mansion speak of its former splendor.

The model of the Chiayi Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation, Chiayi Distillery embodies a unique charm, born from its fusion of old and new.

The Huang’s Old Mansion showcases Han-style artistry through its ceramic mosaic work and bird-shaped brackets.

Music boxes modeled after Warehouses No. 2 and 2-1 showcase a creative approach to cultural asset management, transforming architectural heritage into valuable new products.
