When neighbors walk into the daily life of an old house: ‘ Workstation JK’ responds to the architect’s nostalgia with a semi-open space
To prepare content for a special publication, the X-Basic Planning team visited architect Wu Jian-Zhi at the Workstation JK. In the ground floor space filled with the warm aromas from architect Lai Ren-Shuo's kitchen, we gained deep insights into its regeneration process and design philosophy. Hidden in a narrow alley on Taichung's Jiguang Street, this building, originally a factory and residence, was once forgotten with the passage of time like many old houses in the central district. However, after a visit from the two designers, it found a turning point. Taking 'nostalgia' as its starting point, it explores another possibility for urban living.

Preserving the texture of old Hsinchu city:
”OR” connects revitalized old houses into a network, creating a cultural living landscape
Dongqian Street, extending outward from the entrance of Hsinchu Dongmen Market, was a major transportation route during the Japanese Rule Period, connecting the two administrative centers of the provincial office and county office. Jewelry and silverware shops lined the street, while nearby teahouses, hat companies, printing houses, and photo studios drew endless crowds. In 1934, the "Shinshū-ya" department store, established by Taiwanese entrepreneur Dai Wu-shi, was a brilliant symbol of modern urban life of the time.

Island Tapestry, Weaving a New Chapter in International Cultural Preservation: Tomioka Silk Mill International Forum
This year, we collaborated with Professor Li Zhao-Xiang from the Department of Interior Design at China University of Technology to submit a paper at the international symposium marking the 10th anniversary of the Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites' inscription as a World Heritage Site. Our presentation focused on the revitalization approaches of 'Lukang Chang-Yuan Hospital' and 'Kaohsiung Warehouse No. 2,' exploring how a 'cultural heritage ecosystem' can be established within these sites, thereby engaging in dialogue with experts and scholars from around the world.
